Ransomware Attacks Can Be Devastating, And They’re Only Getting Worse

It seems like every week there is a news story about a massive data breach that affects millions of people and their sensitive personal data. No industry is safe, and breaches appear to be a matter of "when" rather than "if". Of course, it is worth asking are data breaches actually becoming more common, or are we just more aware of them now?

Ransomware Attacks Can Be Devastating, And They’re Only Getting Worse

Turns out, the answer is yes, they are actually becoming more common. Ransomware attacks are not only appearing at a higher rate than ever before, criminals are also cashing in on organizations that are not prepared. Ransoms are reaching the tens of millions, not to mention the cost of upgrading security systems and dealing with any potential lawsuits. Few nonprofits have the capability to recover financially from ransomware attacks despite the enormous risk they currently pose.

A recent article in the New York Times details the current state of cybersecurity in America and abroad. It includes a conversation with Nicole Perloth, who has spent years covering the rising threat of data loss. Her words should serve as a grim warning for the future of cybersecurity if the proper steps are not taken to improve our current response to ransomware attacks.
