The Best Donor Touchpoints for a New Year

Hello to January and hello to a new year! Can you think ahead to six months from now, when many of us are working to close the fiscal year? If that exercise gives you a slight panic attack, you're not alone. But rest assured that there are things you can do right here in January to deepen relationships now so you can close gifts when it counts. Breaking out of the white noise that comes during crunch time begins now.

January is the perfect time to steward your LYBUNTs, and all it takes is a thoughtful message to wish them a happy new year. Seems too simple, right? Well, by stewarding them now and NOT making any sort of ask, you stand a much better chance to pick up the conversation around an ask in the coming months.

The most important message that you can deliver to your LYBUNTs right now is to tell them what your organization achieved last year, a personal note on how their gift was put to use, and a quick sentence about any anticipated changing needs.

By the very nature of what we all do for a living, improve our society, it's quite likely that between Thanksgiving and the end of the year, your organization was active in the community. Did you help with a food drive, toy drive, send students home with care packages, hold a special holiday gathering or show? These activities make for amazing touchpoints, especially if you have a picture or video to share along with it.

For fundraisers at hospitals and healthcare foundations, you may even have news clippings to share, along with a note about how your organization is weathering the latest COVID surge.

This simple touchpoint, early in the new year, can pay dividends down the road. With all of my experience, I'm still amazed at the power of genuine stewardship and what results from it. When you send a note of thanks, you'll be surprised at the "Thank Yous" that come in return (often attached to an unsolicited gift)!
